Success Over Stigma (SOS) is a mental health stigma reduction program led by Interim, Inc. that promotes awareness, education, and community engagement to challenge stigma and support recovery in Monterey County.
What is the Success Over Stigma Program?
SOS is a community advocacy and educational outreach program designed to combat the three most prevalent forms of stigma: community perception, internal stigma and external stigma. The program works to increase understanding and reduce harmful stereotypes through mental health stigma reduction efforts that center education, dialogue, and recovery.
Success Over Stigma engages the community through workshops and outreach as part of a broader community mental health education effort. This is accomplished by recruiting and training mental health clients to share their successful stories of recovery with their peers and the community.
By addressing stigma directly, the program supports mental health awareness and recovery while strengthening understanding across the community.
SOS Speakers
SOS speakers deliver anti-stigma mental health education by telling their stories to schools, businesses, civic groups and faith communities, helping to educate the public about the obstacles they have faced in their personal and professional lives, as well as their success in overcoming those obstacles.
SOS is a great tool to learn more about mental illness while spreading the hopeful message that recovery is an attainable goal.
