September is Suicide Prevention Month

September is Suicide Prevention Month, which is a time to raise awareness of one the most urgent mental health crises. In honor of Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day, which was on September 10th, Interim’s Success Over Stigma program partnered with Suicide Prevention Services of the Central Coast to provide a community presentation for staff and peers at the OMNI Resource Center. The presentation addressed the myths and stigma surrounding suicide and mental health that often serve as barriers to supportive treatment. We discussed community resources aimed at suicide prevention, including the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Participants asked questions and provided peer insights on what suicide prevention meant to them. After the presentation, staff and clients wrote their positive affirmations on sticky notes and created a “Hope Wall,” which will remain at OMNI for the rest of the month. These affirmations are little messages of hope that can serve as reminders of our strength and resiliency. One message stands out: “Asking for help is a strength.” Interim continues to spread awareness to the fact that suicide is a pervasive and complex community issue and above all, suicide is preventable.
