What started as a small initiative by families, faith leaders, social workers, and business leaders to support individuals transitioning from state hospitals into community living has grown into one of Monterey County’s most impactful nonprofits. In 2025, Interim is celebrating an incredible milestone: 50 years of providing essential housing, healing, and hope to thousands of community members.

From its earliest halfway houses in Monterey and Salinas to today’s thriving network of over 20 supportive housing and treatment facilities, Interim has continuously expanded its services to meet the evolving needs of the community. Recognizing that stable, affordable housing is essential to mental health recovery, Interim has been a pioneer in creating dignified, supportive living environments throughout Monterey County.

Reflecting on the organization’s extraordinary journey, Executive Director Dr. Rhiyan Quiton, shared, “Reaching our 50th anniversary is not just about celebrating the passage of time; it’s about celebrating lives transformed, communities strengthened, and barriers overcome. Interim’s mission has always been about believing deeply in each person’s potential and providing the support to realize it.”

Interim’s comprehensive programs, including mental health treatment, affordable housing, residential treatment, social support, homeless outreach and support, and supported education and employment services, have empowered countless individuals toward independence and stability. The organization’s innovative programs have made it an essential resource for those seeking effective resources to aid them in their mental health recovery.

Sophie Yakir, Compliance & Business Development Director, noted the significance of this growth, remarking, “What makes Interim so unique is our commitment to building not just homes, but vibrant communities of support. Every new program and facility reflects our belief that with compassionate care, stable housing, and meaningful connections, people truly thrive.”

Looking ahead, Interim is excited about the Marina Kai Apartments, an essential new permanent supportive housing project designed specifically for very low-income adults with psychiatric disabilities who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Dr. Quiton emphasized, “Marina Kai Apartments represents a significant step forward in our ongoing mission to end homelessness and provide compassionate care. We’re actively raising funds and seeking community support to make this vision a reality—helping even more individuals move toward lasting stability.”

As Interim, Inc. marks its half-century milestone, the excitement is palpable. The celebration represents not just a tribute to past accomplishments but a renewed commitment to innovation, growth, and compassionate service in the years to come.

“We’re looking ahead to the future with great enthusiasm,” added Quiton. “Our work is far from finished. Interim will continue to adapt, expand, and innovate because we know just how transformative our programs are.”
