End Homelessness in Our Community

Housing Features

Sun Rose Apartments will be an apartment complex of transitional and permanent housing for up to 17 homeless residents.

  • ADA accessible to meet the needs of those with physical disabilities
  • On-site mental health services and case management
  • 8 beds of transitional and 9 beds of permanent affordable supportive housing for adults living with mental illness who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness.

What Do We Need?

Interim needs your support to help us complete construction on Sun Rose Apartments. We have raised 96% of our funding goal, but need another $256,000 before the end of December!

Affordability Out Of Necessity

The local need for affordable housing for homeless adults with mental illness is overwhelming. The current Fair Market Rent of a studio apartment in Monterey County according to HUD is $1,672, whereas a one-bedroom apartment is $1,851. In Monterey County, most adults with a serious mental illness are very low income and receive disability public assistance. The average Social Security income of a single disabled individual in the Monterey/Salinas area in 2022 is $1,040 per month.  Interim’s residential housing programs also maintain long waitlists.

Rent for Sun Rose residents, who will be extremely low-income, will be approximately 30% of their income (around $300 per month).

What Will Sun Rose Apartments Look Like?

The eleven-unit project will include 9 permanent studio and one-bedroom units, an eight-bedroom transitional unit and a resident manager unit.

The ground floor of the new building will house a community room and offices for staff to provide on-site services designed to help the tenant live successfully in the housing.  These supportive services which include case management and mental health and peer support will be provided by peer support staff and counselors as well as a resident manager. The first floor includes an apartment for the resident manager who will be on site for afterhours emergencies, as well as two studio apartments of permanent housing.

The second floor is designed as an 8-bedroom unit of transitional housing.  Residents will each have a private bedroom and share 3 bathrooms and common areas of kitchen, dining and living rooms.  This floor will replace the beds which will be lost when the existing building is demolished.

The third floor consists of 7 one-bedroom apartments of permanent housing for single adults with very low income and mental illness.

Tenants will be encouraged to use other services in the community including those provided by Interim, Inc. such as peer support, supported education and employment services and dual recovery services.  These services are offered at the Pajaro Wellness Center on Pajaro Street, approximately two blocks from this location.  Public transportation is convenient to this location, which is essential since only approximately 25% of our clients have vehicles.

Where Are We Now?

Sun Rose is nearing completion! We need your support to raise the remaining need of  just $256,000. We currently expect to finish construction by the end of December 2022. These construction photos were taken in August 2022. As you can see we are now well on our way to finishing this project!
