Breakthrough H’Art

What is Breakthrough H’Art? Breakthrough H’Art is an art program designed to help people heal through creative expression. The program has groups at various locations throughout the week for artists of all levels. Our goal is to give participants a relaxing and healthy environment in which they can unplug from their daily stresses and focus on something fun and expressive.

Since 2004, the group has supported those with mental health challenges as they create, share, and connect with others who are going through a transition toward health and recovery.  Some of the artists have moved from the streets and are now housed by MCHOME, a collaborative program of Interim and Monterey County Behavioral Health.

How does Breakthrough H’Art help? Participants in the Breakthrough H’Art program are given the chance to express themselves through art. In this way they can say things that they are unable to express otherwise. Art gives people a chance to step outside of the usual boundaries of communication. When people take part in a Breakthrough H’Art group they enjoy the freedom to be themselves and work with others who understand them. There is no bad art in Breakthrough H’Art. Everyone has the freedom to create at their own level. Group members look forward to Breakthrough H’Art groups all week because in Breakthrough H’Art, they have a chance to focus on something other than the difficulties they face in daily life. BTH is a group full of acceptance and compassion where you can be yourself and create in a safe environment for everyone.

Breakthrough H’Art not only helps its clients find a healing pathway using art, it also helps to break down the stigma that is associated with mental illness by educating the public and promoting an awareness of mental illness and recovery.

How can people get involved? Breakthrough H’Art has groups every week in multiple locations. We have expanded to include more group members from more locations. There is an open session of Breakthough H’Art every Thursday at 1:30pm at the Our Voices center. For more information, please call  (831)917-3301 or email xbellante@interiminc.org.
